Wildcats win streak halted

Claremont- The biggest turnaround season for the Draughn football team hit a roadblock Friday night at Bunker Hill in a rather controversial situation as the Bears won their Homecoming game 28-27.

"We came out flat and our preparation wasn't what it should be," said Draughn head football coach Chris Powell. "Our kids responded and fought back, I'm proud of them."

The Wildcats faced a 21-6 deficit early but came alive in the second quarter going on a 12 play drive capped by a Braxton Cox to Beckett Nelson four-yard touchdown pass.

Cox ended the Bears next drive by grabbing an interception and then later completed a pass to Nick Chrisco going for 57 yards.

Cox and Chrisco hooked up again for a seven-yard touchdown pass cutting Bunker Hill's lead down to 21-19 at the halftime break.

Draughn took their first lead, 27-21 after Trent Corn completed a six-play third-quarter drive with a two-yard touchdown run.

The lead looked to hold after the Wildcats was able to hold the Bears thanks to key stops by Chrisco, Zach Poteet, Donavan King, Mason Pratt, and an interception by Robbie Gibby.

The Bears executed a late 12 play drive ending with a 17-yard touchdown pass and a point-after kick that went high but was able to stay within the goalposts for the one-point lead.

Khe-Nai Banks returned the opposing kick for nearly 30 yards to put the Wildcats in Bunker Hill territory with under 30 seconds left.

Cox fired a pass near the sidelines that looked to be intercepted but the Bears defender had a foot out of bounds ruling the pass incomplete.

The next play was a missed snap that was recovered by Cox near the 40-yard line and the clock ran out before having a chance to get off another snap.

"We just let (this win) slip away from us, we got to get back to work this week and get ready for a great Hibriten team (at home)."

Cox finished with 194 passing yards on 18 completions led by Chrisco's 80 yards on five receptions.

Corn finished with 82 rushing yards on 21 carries with the third quarter touchdown run.
