Lady Cavs volleyball opens with comeback win

The brand new season for the East Burke volleyball team started off a set down to visiting West Caldwell.

As a comeback was brewing up in the opening set of play, the momentum continued for the Lady Cavaliers taking the next three sets in dominating fashion to win the season opener over the Lady Warriors.

A major factor for the Lady Cavs (1-0 NWFAC) win was at the service line as Kayleigh Icard (5), Reece Abernathy (3), and Gabby Wingate all combined for nine serving aces.

The Lady Warriors started off with a 14-5 advantage in the opening set as Icard, Abernathy, and Aubree Grigg did work at the service line to get West Caldwell's lead down to 22-19 before the visitors scored the final three of four points to gain the 1-0 lead.

From then on, the Lady Cavaliers went full steam ahead never allowing West Caldwell to get ahead off contributing play from Grigg, Icard, Abernathy, Erin Newton, Catherine Hammack, Jordan Newton, and Danielle Foxx.

The JV Lady Cavaliers also won their season opener match in two sets.

East Burke is on the road next week at Patton Monday and Hibriten Tuesday.

Lady Wildcats swept by Patton

Valdese- The Draughn volleyball team held their first home game Thursday hosting county rival Patton.

The Lady Panthers, led by returning NWFAC player of the year Ella Gragg, dominated in a three-set sweep despite many efforts by the Lady Wildcats (0-2 NWFAC).

Draughn built early leads of 3-2 and 4-3 in the opening set off Patton errors before the Lady Panthers scored five consecutive points.

Maddison Powell (kill) recorded a couple points for the Lady Wildcats with Haygen Sigmon registering a block.

Patton dominated the majority of set two despite Georgia Goulding blocking a Lady Panther return.

Bailey Bryant (2) and Powell each added a kill in the final set of play getting Patton's lead down to as low as four points.

Gragg led the way for the Lady Panthers with 11 kills and three serving aces.

The Lady Wildcats picked up the three-set win in the JV game to start 2-0.

Draughn is back in action next Monday at Bunker Hill.
