EB volleyball wins on senior night

Icard- The East Burke volleyball team picked up their first three-set win of the season sweeping visiting Lincolnton on the Lady Cavaliers senior night honoring four seniors.

Senior Gabby Wingate earned the first point for EB (2-10, 2-3 CVAC) in the opening set until Lincolnton went on a 4-1 run to grab the lead.

Key plays at the net by Katherine Greene and Trysten Hare led the comeback as the Lady Cavaliers regained an 8-7 lead after a serving ace by senior Catherine Hammack.

Senior Jordan Newton along with Aubree Grigg and Claire Cook led the charge to close out the first set win.

It was a dominating second set for the Lady Cavaliers building up a 15-8 lead leading to a 2-0 advantage over the visiting Lady Wolves.

Lincolnton gained momentum in the third set of play leading as much as 17-7 until East Burke staged a comeback led by Grigg and Wingate.

Two spikes at the net by Reese Abernathy continued to cut down Lincolnton's lead as Hare and Roky Taylor made key plays to gain the lead.

As Lincolnton battled an attempt to force a fourth set, a block by Grigg ended their efforts.

East Burke, tied for fifth with Lincolnton in the CVAC standings, visits West Lincoln Thursday.

EB soccer claims CVAC opener

It was a struggling season to start for the East Burke boys soccer team's fall 2021 season.

As the Cavaliers opened Catawba Valley Athletic 2A Conference play at home Monday vs Maiden, they have seemed to now be on the right track after defeating the visiting Blue Devils 4-1.

It was also senior night for East Burke (2-4-1, 1-0) honoring eight seniors and are now on a two-game winning streak including last week's 9-0 defeat of county rival Draughn.

"A win is great especially on senior night, the boys played hard and wanted to win," said Cavaliers coach Sam Wall.

Four Cavaliers each scored a goal including seniors Jonathan Garcia, Alexis Hernandez, and Landon Thorne.

Junior Qwinton Hemphill scored the other EB goal with assists from seniors Ben Childres and Bryan Perez and sophomore Bryant Lao.

Sophomore goalkeeper Eduardo Sanchez recorded six saves with Gannon Stotts, Jacob Fair, and Sylas Coleman being key defenders.

"It's a great feeling winning on senior night," said Hernandez, who scored his goal on a penalty kick. "I gotta thank my teammates, it's not a one-person game and we are a team for a reason."

Lady Cavs gain first win

Icard- It was a struggling season of sorts for the East Burke volleyball team.

Thursday night seemed to reverse some fortunes for the Lady Cavaliers hosting Bunker Hill in Catawba Valley Athletic Conference 2A play.

After falling in the first two sets to the visiting Lady Bears, East Burke rallied to claim three consecutive sets to gain that elusive first win of the season.

"They showed a lot of heart, I'm so proud they pushed and showed a lot of battle," said Lady Cavaliers coach Tracy Greene.

EB started off set three with a 7-1 advantage off five consecutive points with Gabby Wingate at the service line.

Aubree Grigg protected the lead recording three of her 12 kills with Jordan Newton adding a block.

The Lady Cavaliers trailed in set four 18-14 when Caroline Pruitt recorded a serving ace and Katherine Greene added a kill for an 18-all tie.

Two separate kills by Pruitt and Grigg pushed EB ahead to force the final do-or-die set.

The lead changed hands five times in the last set of play until kills by Wingate and Grigg nailed the win down.

"It felt great to win, we really communicated and worked together as a team. We didn't let any balls drop and make every point count," said Grigg.

The JV Lady Cavaliers swept Bunker Hill 25-7, 25-5 led by 11 aces and five kills from Addy Fortenberry.

From The Coach

"We are excited and blessed to be able to get on the field again, these last three weeks have been a carousel with cancellations and finding new games. Last week, we didn't perform anywhere near our capacity so our kids are eager to get on the field and correct our issues"

"Hickory is a prime reason why you never judge a team by their record. They are a very good football team who has lost a couple games to good teams. We saw them in a 7 on 7 this summer so we have an idea of their size and speed. They are big and athletic, their line is big and strong, and their defense is tenacious. Everywhere Coach (Joe) Glass goes, he has had success and Hickory is no different"

"Our focus Friday is more about us correcting our issues and playing a better football game. We want to control what we can control: limit turnovers, limit missed tackles, fix our missed assignments upfront, and play with a lot of heart. If we can do these things, then everything else takes care of itself."

"The most important thing, for me, is that our kids are getting an opportunity to step onto the field Friday night and play another football game"

-Chris Powell
