EB soccer claims CVAC opener

It was a struggling season to start for the East Burke boys soccer team's fall 2021 season.

As the Cavaliers opened Catawba Valley Athletic 2A Conference play at home Monday vs Maiden, they have seemed to now be on the right track after defeating the visiting Blue Devils 4-1.

It was also senior night for East Burke (2-4-1, 1-0) honoring eight seniors and are now on a two-game winning streak including last week's 9-0 defeat of county rival Draughn.

"A win is great especially on senior night, the boys played hard and wanted to win," said Cavaliers coach Sam Wall.

Four Cavaliers each scored a goal including seniors Jonathan Garcia, Alexis Hernandez, and Landon Thorne.

Junior Qwinton Hemphill scored the other EB goal with assists from seniors Ben Childres and Bryan Perez and sophomore Bryant Lao.

Sophomore goalkeeper Eduardo Sanchez recorded six saves with Gannon Stotts, Jacob Fair, and Sylas Coleman being key defenders.

"It's a great feeling winning on senior night," said Hernandez, who scored his goal on a penalty kick. "I gotta thank my teammates, it's not a one-person game and we are a team for a reason."
