Lady Wildcats complete sweep of Lady Cavaliers

Icard- As the season is starting to come to a close, the Draughn and East Burke volleyball teams met again in a week after the Lady Wildcats won in a three-set sweep just before Christmas.

The Lady Wildcats again defeated the Lady Cavaliers in three sets as the action was fierce between both squads.

"The East Burke-Draughn rivalry is always a hard match," said Lady Wildcats coach Jamie Ward. "It doesn't matter how your season is going or how your team looks because it's emotional."

The opening set of play saw six early ties with East Burke gaining a 4-3 advantage after a Faith McDowell spike kill.

Draughn was able to jump ahead as much as 19-11 after three kills by Madison Powell and Alexis Crump dishing out serves.

Jordan Newton led a Lady Cavalier comeback until a duo block by Chloe Gary and Georgia Goulding sealed the opening set win.

The Lady Wildcats gained the early advantage in the second set with Goulding, Powell, and Bailey Bryant doing work at the net as Jordan Newton, Danielle Foxx, and Erin Newton countered for the Lady Cavaliers.

EB held a strong lead in the third set until a late five-point run helped Draughn steal the lead away.

It was a close and fierce ending as Kayleigh Icard set up many saves to keep the ball in play to return over the net.

Powell (10 saves) and Goulding sealed the deal for the Lady Wildcats, who now have two games remaining in the 2020 season including today's road trip to West Caldwell.

"I'm just proud of the girls for coming out and playing hard in all three matches," said Ward.

Jordan Newton led the Lady Cavaliers with 10 kills with Foxx (8 blocks, 5 kills) and Erin Newton (16 assists, 3 kills) making contributions.

Draughn also won the JV match (25-19, 25-15) and was led by Helena Hatley (3 kills, serving ace) and Speed Hatley (3 serving aces, kill) with Bella Williams, GiGi Smith, Emma Lewis, and Ella Heavner also leading at the service line.

The JV Lady Cavaliers were led by Katherine Greene (9 digs, 5 kills), Allison Teague (6 digs, 2 serving aces), and Chloe Cook (6 digs).
