Honoring Coach Owens: Valdese Rec renovation project

Wayne Owens is the original patriarch of the Valdese Recreation Department to many serving the youth in the 1950s to 70s.

Fast forward five eras later, the memory lives on among former and current Valdese citizens in an attempt to renovate the upstairs portion of the Valdese Recreation Center in his memory.

"Our (Valdese) Community Center was our hangout," said David Brinkley in a promotional YouTube video to spearhead the renovation project.

"It was a wonderful place to play and we had good leadership there (with Wayne Owens)."

Brinkley started the project fund by donating $50,000 with the Town of Valdese looking to match that amount.

The renovation project will cost $350,000 as 110,000 has already been raised for a difference of 240,000 dollars needed.

The funded project will include new floors, paint, six retractable basketball goals, bleachers, wall padding, scoreboards, a gym dividing curtain, and a newly renovated lobby.

New Valdese Parks and Recreation Director David Andersen noted if the total funds are met, the project could begin next July with the renovation project completed by the 2022-23 fiscal year.

Brinkley and Anita Bumgarner were former Valdese Tiger athletes playing under Owens and have many long-lasting memories of his days working at the Valdese Rec Center.

"He never had a dull moment and was able to work with everyone," said Bumgarner. "He was a good man, straight as an arrow, and didn't put up with any ridiculousness."

"Wayne was like a father figure to a lot of us," said Brinkley. "He not only taught us (sports) but taught us sportsmanship and how to have character and integrity."

Brinkley added, "He didn't tolerate partiality and wanted to have things done the right way (when coaching)."

Contributions for this renovation project can be made online or by check to the Town of Valdese.

Valdese Pee-Wee Complete Undefeated Season

The Valdese Tigers pee-wee football team completed a 9-0 undefeated championship season after defeating Oak Hill 32-6 in the Burke County Youth Football Championships this past Saturday at Patton High School.

Remi Treadway led the way for the Tigers with 210 rushing yards and three touchdowns covering 18, 9, and 61 yards along with punching in a 2-point conversion run and passing to Brylan Pearson for another two-point conversion.

Pearson scored the other touchdown for Valdese and ran in two 2-point conversions with recording three tackles for loss on defense.

"I'm just so proud of the whole team, they all improved tremendously from the first week of practice," said Valdese head coach Craig Treadway.

According to Treadway, the Tigers started out with just three kids having playing experience and had to sit out of the East Burke pre-season Jamboree.

"We were simply not ready for any gameplay at that point as we were still teaching positions due to having so many first-year players."

The Tigers started off the season with a 28-12 road win over Glen Alpine and a 28-0 home win over East Burke when Remi Treadway scored all four touchdowns (3 rushing, 1 defense) against the Royals.

A test followed for Valdese on the road against Oak Hill pulling out a 50-48 win over the Bulldogs with Treadway scoring seven touchdowns.

The games that followed saw the Tigers outscore their opposition 202-60 including a 28-0 home win over neighboring rival Drexel.

"We preached effort from day one and I told them repeatedly to give us effort and good things would happen. The kids worked hard and it paid off week after week all the way through the championship game."

JV Cavs gain first conference win

Icard- The East Burke JV football team returned at full strength Thursday for a home Catawba Valley Athletic Conference 2A match-up with Lincolnton.

Led by the dynamic rushing duo of Levi Coble and Caden Buff, the JV Cavaliers collected their first conference win in a 30-0 shutout win over the visiting Wolves.

"That is the key of being back at full strength," said East Burke football coach Derrick Minor. "The guys are healthy for the first time since playing Freedom, just a break out night and everybody got to play. It's just a fun night to have success and walk off the field victorious."

Buff led the JV Cavaliers with 120 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown followed by Coble with 115 yards, two rushing touchdowns, and two 2-pt conversions to spark the offensive drives, including each having a best run of 37 yards.

Coble also grabbed an interception on defense along with Nathan Rees, Asher Gebhard, and Cannon Morrison.

Other defensive standouts included Diego Ramos (5 tackles, 2 TFL), Patrick Hernandez (5 tackles, TFL), Gavon Franklin (6 tackles), Hayden Parker (5 tackles, forced fumble), and Jordan Fox (fumble recovery).

The JV Cavaliers next travel to West Lincoln next Thursday.
