Buffamoyer resigns as East Burke football coach

Icard- After three seasons, the East Burke football team will have a new head coach after Mark Buffamoyer stepped down from the position as announced by EBHS principal Katie Moore in a press release from Burke County Public Schools.

"I would like to thank Coach Buffamoyer for his hard work and dedication to high school students and athletes over the past decades and specifically his commitment to East Burke High School and our football program," said Moore.

Buffamoyer, who served as an assistant coach on the Cavaliers staff before taking the head coach position, finished with a 5-28 mark including an overtime home win over West Lincoln in 2017.

"It was with a heavy heart that I informed Mrs. Moore of my decision to step down as the Cavaliers head coach," said Buffamoyer.

"After much self-reflection on where our football program is going, I feel it is time for me to step aside. I believe the program needs new energy with someone who has an energy about them that will reach out to young people and bring them into the program."

East Burke athletic director Jim Childers noted Buffamoyer will still currently coach the softball team as he started his first season with the Lady Cavs last season and also is willing to accept an assistant coaching role.

"There is a lot of football knowledge that will leave with (Coach Buff)," said Childers, who coached with Buffamoyer at EBHS since 2008. "I appreciate his hard work and dedication over the years with our students and athletes and his work to uphold the legacy of our football program."

The next head coach at East Burke will be the tenth in the 47th season of football at Danny Williams Field.

Cavs sweep Rebels in season opener

Vale- After graduating two key starters and losing another by transfer, the East Burke girls basketball team was still able to look forward and start off the 2019-20 season on the right foot winning Thursday's season opener at West Lincoln 60-22.

One of the leading newcomers for East Burke six-foot freshman post Aubrie Snyder made a strong impact in her varsity debut scoring a game-high 18 points, eight in the second quarter.

Snyder's top scoring performance also contributed to 30 bench points for the Lady Cavaliers (1-0).

EB was also strong on defense making 15 steals led by seniors Graleigh Hildebran (5), Riley Haas (4), and Ashlyn Stilwell (4).

"It was a whole team effort," said Lady Cavaliers coach Crystal Bartlett. "Our defense was awesome, I felt like we faced adversity offensively but started getting confidence and finishing better."

Haas (12) and Stilwell (10, two 3 pts) were the other Lady Cavalier double-figure scorers heading into a fierce road test at county rival Freedom.

"It's going to be a good challenge for us, just got to look at and see what we can do."

Boys: East Burke 57, West Lincoln 22

Eight of 12 points from junior guard Aasin Lor in the third quarter pushed the Cavaliers to a 25 point lead in rolling to a season-opening road win.

Micah Chrisco, Logan Shuford, Cam Propst, and Trey Ward also scored in the quarter after leading at the halftime break 29-12.

"We were undisciplined defensively in the first half but got better in the second half, we missed quite a few layups offensively but trying to move the ball better," said East Burke coach Jerome Ramsey.

Propst finished with a double-double (11 pts, 11 rebounds) with Chrisco (9 pts, 7 assists) and Luke Coble (5 pts, 5 assists) also being key performers.

EB (1-0) now head into two road games before Thanksgiving at Freedom (Tuesday) and McDowell (Wednesday) that will give a great test.

"It's always tough (playing at Freedom and McDowell), we just got to keep getting better and keep practicing in making the simple plays."

Wildcats boys open season with win and brand new lineup

Valdese- It was a brand new day for the Draughn boys basketball team, coming off a conference championship season last winter.

The Wildcats looked ahead with a brand new starting lineup and dominated in Tuesday's season opener winning 83-43 over West Lincoln.

"The kids came out and played hard and played together after not even getting a true practice together," said Draughn assistant coach Drew McGuire. "I thought we did a good job on defense and let that lead us to easy transition baskets on offense."

The new Wildcats starting five featured seniors Braxton Cox, Denver Treadway, and Nick Chrisco fresh off a historic football season along with returning players senior Isaac Walker and sophomore Daylin Pritchard.

After a 16-7 first-quarter lead, Walker took charge scoring 12 of his game-high 24 points to give Draughn (1-0) a 22 point advantage (41-19) at the halftime break.

Pritchard (11), Zach Poteet (8), and Marshall Byrd (5) were key second-half scorers to finish off the win against a Rebels team coached by former DHS coach Chad Wright.

"It's going to be a fun season and I really look forward to it with the group of guys we have," said McGuire.

GIRLS: Draughn 75, West Lincoln 38

The Lady Wildcats played their second consecutive game of the week and earned their first win of the season with three starters sharing the scoring lead.

"We needed this win after having a tough game (with South Caldwell), I think we had a lot of girls contribute offensively and I'm excited to have a lot of scorers," said Lady Wildcats coach Liz Taylor.

Returners Haley Lowman and Bailey Shuping and first-year player Ella Abernathy each scored a game-high 12 points to lead Draughn.

Abernathy hit the first-quarter three-pointer as part of a 11-0 run while a second-quarter layup by Lowman gave the Lady Wildcats a 20 point lead.

Lowman and Hailey Kincaid were also key defenders with Kincaid getting a fourth-quarter assist to Abby Parker.

The Wildcats stay home next Tuesday hosting St. Stephens.

Leading Performers:
Draughn- Braxton Cox, Trent Corn, Nick Chrisco
W Caldwell- Cameron Beaver, Faizon Dickson

Coach's Quote:
"The bye week was very beneficial for us allowing to get some bumps and bruises healed up, we also got a chance to go ahead and state preparing for West Caldwell and see them in action."

"A big thing for us is to stop the option, West Caldwell has some very athletic kids and are improving week to week. Coach (Mike) Biggerstaff has done a great job with those young men in a short time and we have to be ready."

"Offensively, we got the chance to sure some things up front and move some people into new positions, we think this will make us more athletic up front and able to do a few more things."

"The biggest key overall is getting that winning mentality back that we had for five weeks, we have really challenged our kids the last two weeks to put (the losses) behind them and move forward."
-Chris Powell
