2019 Freedom Inv: Lady Cavs, Wildcats win fifth place games

Morganton- The Draughn boys and both East Burke basketball teams completed the final round of the Freedom Christmas Invitational Saturday.

The Lady Cavaliers and the Wildcat boys each finished fifth with wins over Erwin 60-52 and R-S Central 62-60 respectively.

The Cavalier boys finished fourth after a 66-59 loss to North Buncombe.

Girls Fifth Place Game: East Burke 60, Erwin 52

In a rematch from last year's tournament semifinals, East Burke overcame a 14-10 first-quarter deficit with Riley Haas scoring eight of her game-high 22 points to gain a 25-20 halftime lead.

The Lady Warriors outscored the Lady Cavs 25-15 to get back ahead going into the fourth quarter.

EB (9-3) made the final statement with a 20-7 fourth quarter off 11 of 15 points from Ashlyn Stilwell, nine off free-throws.

It was a challenging tournament for the Lady Cavs starting off with a loss to runner-up Enka and rebounding with a win over former conference rival R-S Central and also battling injuries to starters Stilwell and Gracie Ruff.

"I feel like we played good in all three games," said Lady Cavaliers coach Crystal Bartlett. "The first part of the season is done and now we start the second part, it's not going to be easy in our conference."

Boys Fifth Place Game: Draughn 62, R-S Central 60

Isaac Walker led the Wildcats with 23 points to hold off a late rally from former conference rival R-S Central.

It's the second consecutive appearance for Draughn in the Freedom Christmas Invitational after finishing runner-up last winter and they are sure going to benefit from the competition.

"The reason we play this Christmas tournament is to see some quality opponents," said Draughn coach Yates Jensen. "We saw some teams we never saw before and we just now hope to work and improve on some things."

Denver Treadway (16) and Daylin Pritchard (11) were the other double-digit scorers for the Wildcats (7-5).

Draughn opened with an overtime loss to North Buncombe and rebounded with a win over Forbush when Treadway set a new career-high of 24 points.

Boys Third Place Game: North Buncombe 66, East Burke 59

The Cavaliers started with a 16-12 first-quarter lead and held a 21-19 halftime lead before the Blackhawks took over outscoring EB 19-14 and 28-24 in stealing third place away from EB.

Luke Coble led the Cavs (5-7) with 15 points including two fourth-quarter 3-pointers in an attempt to stay within North Buncombe's lead.

Trey Ward also made a pair of 3s in finishing with 14 points, including scoring six in the first quarter.

EB had an adventurous run through the tournament starting with a 77-75 win over Enka won by a steal and buzzer-beating layup by Aasin Lor.

Lor set a new season-high of 18 points in the third matchup with long-time county rival Freedom in a 63-54 loss.

Cavs hang on to wins over Bears

Icard- The East Burke basketball teams faced Northwestern Foothills 2A Conference rivals Bunker Hill in their final game Thursday before Christmas break.

Both Cavalier squads were pushed to the limit but held on to wins over the Bears as the Lady Cavs improve to 2-0 in conference play and the Cavalier boys even their mark at 1-1.

Both East Burke teams next play Enka in the opening round of the Freedom Christmas Invitational next Thursday at 4:00 and 5:30 respectively.

  • GIRLS: East Burke 40, Bunker Hill 34

The Lady Cavaliers led Bunker Hill 15-8 after one-quarter of play but the visiting Lady Bears looked to gain position for the rest of the contest.

Bunker Hill outscored EB 8-5 in the second quarter for a 20-16 halftime deficit and held a 26-25 lead in the third quarter before EB came back to score six consecutive points to take back the lead into the fourth quarter.

A blow came in the fourth quarter for the Lady Cavs when leading scorer Ashlyn Stilwell fouled out with just three points but freshman Aubree Grigg stepped up scoring six of her eight total points in the last period to preserve the win.

"Losing Ashlyn hurt us as she was our go-to player," said Lady Cavs coach Crystal Bartlett. "Grigg scored some good points for us and a lot of the girls stepped up."

The win gives the Lady Cavs 37 consecutive regular-season conference wins in a streak that could reach four years after a home game with Hibriten to open the new year on January 3rd.

Riley Haas led all EB scorers with 13 points along with recording four rebounds and four steals.

  • BOYS: East Burke 54, Bunker Hill 51

East Burke started off with the game's first ten points including Aasin Lor and Cam Propst scoring four each for a 19-6 first-quarter lead over the Bears.

Bunker Hill held advantage the rest of the way winning the second and third quarters 16-11 and 18-13 respectively.

Each squad scored 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Bears were in a position to tie and send the game into overtime but a Bunker Hill pass from under the basket was knocked away as the buzzer sounded.

"It's good to get a win anytime (in this conference)," said Cavaliers coach Jerome Ramsey. "I liked our start and I think we just lost some focus, that's on me just got to communicate better and finish better."

Lor (10 pts) and Micah Chrisco (18 pts, Career-High) each contributed four fourth-quarter points to support the Cavaliers advantage as they each finished in double figures.

Chrisco also added three steals and an assist with Trey Ward (7 pts), Propst (6 pts, steal), and Seth Pruitt (4 rebounds, assist) each playing a role in the Cavaliers victory.

(Micah Chrisco attempts a layup vs. Bunker Hill, Chrisco scored a career-high 18 points in EB's first conference win of the 19-20 season) (Wayne Baker)

  • MS Basketball: Lady Raiders remain undefeated

The East Burke Middle Lady Raiders basketball team extended their undefeated record to 9-0 (7-0 in the Foothills Athletic Conference) after home wins over Table Rock and West McDowell.

Kassie Turner led EBMS with ten points in the win over the Lady Falcons while Ally Moore scored a team-high 15 points vs. West McDowell.

Lady Raiders coach Steve Moore also credited Braelyn Stilwell for her defensive play in both wins.

  • MS Wrestling: Table Rock 50, East Burke 48; W McDowell 90, East Burke 14

The Raiders wrestling team dropped to 4-3 (3-3 FAC) after this week's losses.

Grayson Phillips (7-0, 106), Joshua Hess (7-0, 160), and Lincoln Pierce (6-0, 132) remain undefeated for EBMS.

NCHSAA making progress towards adding 5A Classification

Chapel Hill- The NCHSAA Board of Directors held their winter meeting Thursday and discussed many things including the beginning stages of the next realignment in 2021-22.

A vote of all member schools is expected to be made in January 2020 or at least by the end of the spring semester for a proposal to add a 5A classification.

"The Board of Directors worked hard over the course of this meeting to discuss pressing issues within the Association," said NCHSAA commissioner Que Tucker. "They accomplished the critical task of defining the next steps in the realignment process while also dealing with pertinent agenda items to improve the experience, inclusion, and health and safety of student-athletes."

Other agenda items in the winter 2019 meeting included approval of 2020-2021 sports calendar, approving a joint venture between the NCHSAA and Special Olympics of North Carolina, changes to the men's golf state championship qualifications, approving an addition of a monetary fine for failing to provide appropriate athletic event medical care requirements, and adoption to require a game day administrator for all 7-on-7 preseason football scrimmages.

Below are predictions of area conferences based on the current ADM numbers
