Icard- Bandys topped the East Burke boys track & field team 105-96 in the Cavaliers' first home meet of the 2022 season but still had incredible performances.
Sophomore KJ Byrd led the way with four event wins in the 110 hurdles, high jump, long jump, and pole vault.
His pole vault mark of 15 feet, four inches set a brand new 2A state record as the next step for Byrd is the all-time NC record of 16 feet, 5.25 inches held by Lake Norman's Spencer Evans.
Spencer Goins was another Cavalier event winner in the 100 and 200-meter dashes with times of 11.50 and 24.12 seconds.
Davin Price, Avery "Slim Shady" Fraley, Kolby Byrd, and Ian Cox were other key EB performers.
The Lady Cavaliers finished in fourth place with 34 total points with their only win coming in the 4x800 relay registering a time of 12:02.25 as Meah Walsh, Piper Strong, Cadence Willis, and Phil McDaniel were on the team.
Walsh added runner-up finishes in the 800 and 1600 meter runs and Strong finished fourth in the 800-meter run.
Taylor Bostain was another key Lady Cavalier performer placing second in the discus throw and third in the shot put.

Maiden- The East Burke track & field teams opened the 2022 outdoor season at Maiden High School last week and came away with five event wins.
Overall, the boys team finished in second place and the Lady Cavaliers finished in third place.
Spencer Goins (200 meters), Davin Price (400 meters), and Ian Cox (high jump) were EB boys event winners.
Goins also added a runner-up finish in the 100 meters and joined Asher Gebhard, Avery Fraley, and Mason Robison on the second-place 4x100 relay team.
The 4x800 relay team - featuring Joey Williams, Jonathan Garcia, Caleb Johnson-White, and Jackson Spencer - also placed second.
Other runner-up finishers included Garcia (1600 meters), Williams (800 meters), Fraley (long jump), and Brady Bostain (shot put).
Event winners for the Lady Cavaliers included Taylor Bostain in the shot put and discus throw and the 4x800 relay compiled of Meah Walsh, Piper Strong, Mekenzie Harris, and Cadence Willis.
Walsh also added a third-place finish in the 400 meters with Phil McDaniel (800 meters 2nd) and Ashaunah Reinhardt-Phillips (shot put 2nd, discus throw 3rd) adding top finishes.
Icard- The East Burke baseball team is on a roll in a turnaround season winning their third consecutive game after an 0-3 start.
The winning streak started with last week's 1-0 road win at Bandys and followed with home wins over Newton-Conover (8-7) and Bunker Hill (2-1).
Cooper Greene led the Cavaliers against the Red Devils hitting a fifth-inning grand slam and recording a walk-off hit in the seventh.
Colin Eckard excelled on the mound against the Bears striking out eight batters and only allowing two hits in a key defensive game with shortstop Luke Bumgarner and centerfielder Blane Fulbright providing assistance.
Bumgarner (3), Eckard (2), Will Weidner (2), Hollan Cline (2), and Greene (1) all crossed home plate for EB.
The JV Cavaliers also had a 2-0 week defeating Newton-Conover 15-1 and Bunker Hill 5-4.
Logan Brown won it for EB with a walk-off double to score Cannon Morrison against the JV Bears.
Barger Shook, Mason Mosteller, Gabe Wittenburg, and Caden Buff were leading hitters for the week.

The Draughn softball team starts off the 2022 season on a three-game undefeated streak gaining key wins this week over Watauga 15-5 and Hibriten 8-7.
Senior Regan Winkler led the Lady Cats with seven RBIs (5 vs. Watauga) and six hits with Katie Cozort adding six runs, five hits, and four RBIs (3 hits & 3 runs vs. Hibriten).
Other key Draughn batters included Maddison Powell (4 hits, 2 runs, RBI), Brianna Nations (4 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Maddie Crouch (3 hits, 3 runs), and Aubrie Snyder (3 hits, 4 RBIs).
Katie Hamm also added three hits, two RBIs, and two runs in Tuesday's home win over Watauga and Addison Poteet scored two runs.
Hamm got the win at Hibriten pitching all seven innings with tossing three strikeouts.
Laney Winebarger was the winning pitcher vs. Watauga tossing three strikeouts in three relief innings.
Winkler, Crouch, and Nations were key defensive contributors for the Lady Wildcats this week.
