Lady Wildcats softball off to 2-0 start

Valdese- Coming off a season that reached the third round of the 2A state playoffs and being a strong contender in the NWFAC standings, the Draughn softball team started off the 2020 season with having to replace four starters lost to graduation.

The Lady Wildcats still have a bit of a spark left from last spring starting off with a 2-0 record after Thursday's 7-1 home opener win over Watauga.

The win for Draughn came off senior Elle Tanner pitching a no-hitter through five innings and striking out six Lady Pioneer batters a day after striking out nine in the road win over Freedom.

The first run for the Lady Wildcats came in the bottom of the second inning as a Maddison Powell single scored Regan Winkler, who led off the inning with a double.

Two innings later, Draughn produced three more runs off a Dakota Melacon 2-RBI double scoring Nikki Smith and Brianna Nations followed by Melacon coming home off a Lexi Poston single.

Bayleigh Gentieu and Winkler added RBI doubles in the fifth to score Sara Walker and Nations respectively with Nations adding an unearned run in the sixth.

Smith pitched the top of the seventh inning in relief of Tanner despite giving up a lead-off single the game ended on a lineout, a pickoff at second base, and a groundout.

"Anytime you win is good but we are still filling ourselves out," said Lady Wildcats coach Chris Cozort. "It was a total team effort we needed, all 14 girls filled out the lineup card and we got lots of opportunities (this season)."

Draughn starts NWFAC play at Hibriten Tuesday.
