Lady Cavs season ends in fourth round

Icard- A memorable season and chapter for five East Burke seniors came to a close Tuesday as the two-seeded Lady Cavaliers battled with third-seeded Newton-Conover even into overtime.

The visiting Lady Red Devils gained the upper hand in overtime winning 58-55 to advance to Saturday's 2A western regional final.

EB led 16-8 after one quarter behind 11 points and three 3 pointers from Riley Haas but Newton countered with a 15-10 second quarter as the Lady Cavaliers led by three points, 26-23, at the halftime break.

The third quarter was tight with Newton holding a 9-6 advantage as freshman Aubree Grigg led EB making two baskets over Newton's 6-3 senior center Chyna Cornwell.

With the game tied at 32 to start the fourth quarter, there were many ties as Haas scored 11 more points including all six of her free-throws but a last-second layup for Newton forced the extra overtime period.

Newton scored the first four points in the overtime period as EB came back with free-throws by Haas and Ashlyn Stilwell to just trail by one point.

The Lady Red Devils followed by scoring the next seven of 12 points as EB finished with a two-point jumper by Zoie Smith and a Gracie Ruff 3 pointer.

Haas finished with 28 points in her last game at East Burke along with fellow seniors Graleigh Hildebran (6 pts, 5 steals), Gracie Ruff (6 pts, 2 steals), Ashlyn Stilwell, and Sarah Grace Lockee.

Grigg finished with eight points and sophomore Smith added five.
