Cavs comeback falls short

Marion- 28 points ain't enough to kill the fight of the new-look 2019 East Burke football team.

The Cavaliers came all the way back to be down one score in the fourth quarter but host McDowell was able to sneak in a late touchdown to complete the 41-28 victory.

"I give a lot of credit that there was a lot of fight left in our kids," said East Burke head coach Mark Buffamoyer. "We have to hang in there and hopefully good things will happen for us."

Senior Josh Moore again led EB (1-1) with a four-touchdown performance finishing with 174 yards on 29 carries.

His first touchdown run for 11 yards completed a 12-play second-quarter drive and later added a 10-yard run just before halftime to cut the Titans lead to 35-14.

Brett Childers opened the second half with a tuck and run 38-yard keeper to get deep in McDowell territory.

Moore was in the endzone again eight plays later off a one-yard dive cutting back McDowell's lead to 14 points.

The Titans committed a turnover on downs on the next drive just near midfield and the Cavs went to work with a Childers to Luke Coble 23 yard completion setting up just another one-yard touchdown dive by Moore.

McDowell had a lengthy drive go into EB territory but were ultimately forced to punt downing it at the Cavaliers own ten-yard line.

An offsides call on the Titans moved EB up five yards and Moore and Childers each took short runs until Moore busted out a 45 yard run up the Cavalier sideline setting up a chance to tie the game.

Two plays later, Childers was intercepted on a rushed pass attempting to be thrown away.

McDowell answered with a touchdown run in six plays to put the final nail in their first win of the season.

Childers also crossed the 100-yard rushing mark with 107 yards and added 56 yards on five completions all to Coble.

Cody Huffman (three sacks) and Logan Johnson (INT) led the Cavs defensively.

EB stays on the road next Friday vs. Fat Friday rival Freedom.

Outlook:

Josh Moore opened the season last Friday with a bang scoring four rushing touchdowns off 202 yards.

Brett Childers excelled at quarterback as a backup to starter Seth Pruitt scoring a rushing touchdown with Luke Coble adding the other Cavalier touchdown on a 79 yard punt return.

McDowell quarterback Riley Moore completed 7 of 12 passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns in last week's loss to R-S Central.

Powell's 18 kills leads Lady Cats

Valdese- The home opener for the Draughn volleyball team started off nicely with an opening set win over Avery County.

The visiting Lady Vikings gave push to the Lady Wildcats but persevered to a three-set victory behind 18 total kills by Kirsten Powell.

Powell had a stretch of three consecutive kills twice in Tuesday's home game while also connecting on a third set serving ace.

"I felt we started out strong but started laying back," said Powell. "I feel we are coming out strong (this season) and we will get better."

Avery led the second set as much as 10-7 and 12-8 as Powell recorded four kills to gain a 16-15 lead.

Chloe Gary (dig), Hannah Copeland (serve ace), Bailey Bryant (kill), and Haygen Sigmon (block) made key plays to close out the set for a 2-0 advantage.

Avery scored the first point of set three but didn't hold a lead long thanks to serves from Sara Walker and Maddie Nelson building an 8-2 lead that was never lost.

Alexis Crump also recorded a serving ace for the Lady Wildcats (3-1).

Draughn also won the JV matchup in two sets (25-15, 25-10).

The Lady Wildcats continue non-conference action on the road Thursday vs Alexander Central.

Wildcats fall in opener

Vale- It just wasn't the night the Draughn varsity football team had in mind to open the 2019 season.

A trip to West Lincoln saw turnovers and a dominating offensive presence by the Rebels in a 52-13 rout.

Canon Bridges led the way for West Lincoln with 269 rushing yards and five touchdown runs, including a 42-yard third-down run following a Wildcat turnover on downs at midfield.

The first half offensive woes continued for Draughn (0-1) with an interception and lost fumble as the Rebels took advantage to grow the shutout to 46 points.

The Wildcats eventually got on the board in the fourth quarter off a one-yard run by Trent Corn.

Quarterback Braxton Cox, finishing with 162 passing yards, added a touchdown in the last seconds with a six-yard completion to Denver Treadway.

Nick Chrisco was a key offensive asset for the Wildcats catching ten passes from Cox to total 124 yards.

Draughn hosts their home opener next Friday vs. county rival Freedom.

Moore's 4 TD runs leads Cavs to victory

Icard- East Burke senior running back Josh Moore was more than ready to get his last season as a Cavalier off and running.

In fact, the first play from scrimmage was a screen pass from Brett Childers to Moore covering 60 yards that got EB off and running.

Three plays later, Moore was in the endzone for his first of four touchdown runs to carry the Cavaliers to a 41-6 season-opening win over Highland Tech.

His other three touchdown runs went for 27, 48, and 60 yards to finish with 197 rushing yards on 19 carries.

"I gotta first thank God and the offensive line always," said Moore. "It's good to start with a bang in our last first home game, we just got to keep our minds that we are a better football team than most think we are."

Following Moore's last touchdown run, Luke Coble (79 punt return) and Childers (18 run) put the final touches on the Cavalier win.

Childers, serving in place of starting quarterback Seth Pruitt, compiled 72 passing yards on just two completions and added 68 rushing yards on eight keepers.

"I'm just excited that football is back and I thank God for it," said Childers, also grabbing an interception on defense. "We just know we can do this together (for the weeks to come)."

The Cavaliers (1-0) have now won their season opener for the second consecutive season with last season's road win at West Caldwell and head coach Mark Buffamoyer believes this win turns a mighty tide towards a season of great expectations.

"We are proud of this win and proud of our kids and we are going to celebrate it and enjoy it," said Buffamoyer. "When you are 1-10 the season before, this win really changes directions for us."

East Burke hits the road next Friday to face former longtime Northwestern 4A rival McDowell.

Lady Wildcats volleyball off to 2-0 start

Vale- The Draughn volleyball team kicked off the 2019 season on the road gaining three-set wins over Mitchell Tuesday and West Lincoln Thursday.

"I am very proud of all of my girls and how hard they have worked," said Lady Wildcats volleyball coach Jamie Ward. "Our focus this year is returning to the fundamentals of volleyball and limiting errors, no matter the opponent and score, and they did just that (vs. West Lincoln)."

Kirsten Powell led the Lady Wildcats (2-0) with 13 kills and Haygen Sigmon adding a team-best four serving aces.

Chloe Gary (8 assists, 4 kills) and Georgia Goulding (3 blocks, 2 kills) also contributed in the win.

Draughn stays on the road Monday vs. Maiden before Tuesday's home opener with Avery County.

EB soccer falls on road

The East Burke boys soccer team opened the 2019 season Tuesday at North Lincoln falling short of victory 4-3.

"We were up 3-1 by the 55th minute but just couldn't finish out the win," said Cavalier soccer coach Sam Wall. "We played well in spurts but made a few mistakes that cost us."

Micah Chrisco, Antony Salgado Rodriguez, and Anthony Thao each scored a goal for EB (0-1) with Rodriguez adding an assist.

David Benitez recorded six saves in goal for the Cavaliers.

EB stays on the road Monday vs. county rival Freedom.

EB volleyball starts 2-0

Sawmills- The East Burke volleyball team started off the 2019 season with back to back road matches each winning over West Lincoln and South Caldwell in three sets.

In Tuesday's match with the Lady Spartans, the Lady Cavaliers (2-0) couldn't easily put the hosts away as they came back from a short deficit to take set one with Riley Haas and Erica Clontz making key plays at the net and Graleigh Hildebran completing a serving ace.

EB dominated play in set two with first-year varsity player Sara Suddreth making a key assist.

Haas and Clontz contributed again to put away the sweep with South Caldwell making a late run of five consecutive points to tie things up but couldn't get ahead to force an extra set.

Clontz led EB with eight kills Tuesday night as well as Monday's win over the Lady Rebels.

The JV Lady Cavaliers also start off with a 2-0 mark after a three-set win over the JV Lady Spartans.

The Lady Cavaliers are back in action next Tuesday at county rival Freedom.

Countdown To Football: Cats, Cavs make final tune-ups in scrimmages

The final preparations are done for the 2019 varsity football seasons at Draughn and East Burke after a week of scrimmages.

The Wildcats opened with hosting R-S Central last Saturday morning, traveled to Chase Tuesday night, and faced Bandys in the Burke County Jamboree.

The Cavaliers hosted North Wilkes Tuesday night and rounded out the Burke Jamboree with R-S Central.

The following is a brief recap for both squads with remarks from head coaches Chris Powell (Draughn) and Mark Buffamoyer (East Burke).

Draughn opens the regular season next Friday at West Lincoln as East Burke stays home hosting Highland Tech.

DRAUGHN

The Wildcats return senior quarterback Braxton Cox and a pair of receivers Denver Treadway and Khe-Nai Banks to fuel the offense.

The offensive motor is even more strongly in the rushing game by Trent Corn and Nick Chrisco.

Chrisco recorded three catches out of the backfield vs R-S with Corn adding a touchdown run.

A new addition to Draughn's offensive system is Freedom transfer Beckett Nelson making two receptions vs R-S.

Vs Bandys, Cox made successful completions to Treadway and Banks to get deep in Trojans territory but to no avail in getting in the endzone.

"We're getting better, we were able to throw the ball well (against Bandys) and there were times the offensive line played lights out but also had pressure on us," said Powell.

On the defensive side, the Wildcats have featured new talent in Patton transfer Donovan King and freshman Donnell Wilkins.

King led in tackles in the R-S Central scrimmage with Wilkins recovering a fumble.

Other defensive standouts included Treadway, Robbie Gibby, and Omarion Connelly.

"We missed some tackles (on Bandys) and we just need to get better all the way around before next Friday night."

EAST BURKE

Senior Josh Moore is the returning spark for the Cavalier offense rushing for 150 yards and two touchdowns vs North Wilkes.

Moore also scored on a 48 yard touchdown run vs R-S Central.

EB was also experimenting with a two-QB system in seniors Seth Pruitt and Brett Childers.

Childers handled QB duties Friday night setting up a goal line situation after a 14 yard tuck and run keeper.

Senior first year player Luke Coble and sophomore Blane Fulbright was able to assist the Cavs offensively.

Depth has grown for EB defensively with Childers, Coble, Austin Sellers, Landon Langley-Smith, Raelen Lo, Chase Lowman, Cody Huffman, Noah Rooks, Michael Magni, Chris Huffman, and Nick Saine each having their hand on a stop.

"We just go and get better (with these scrimmages) and know what we can do," said Buffamoyer. "We just now put this behind us because nobody will talk about scrimmages in the middle of the season."

The scrimmage portion of the 2019 high school football season begins Saturday with Draughn hosting R-S Central at a 9:30 AM start.

The Wildcats will also travel to Chase on Tuesday as East Burke hosts North Wilkes the same day at 6pm.

The Burke County Jamboree will conclude the scrimmages at East Burke next Friday with Draughn facing Bandys at 5pm and East Burke facing R-S Central at 8:15pm.

A newly named Twitter page "Friday Nights in Carolina" released preseason all-conference lists for all of North Carolina's high school football conferences based off of recommendations and viewing game footage from last season.

The preseason all-conference list for the Northwestern Foothills 2A Athletic Conference was tweeted Monday and listed four from East Burke and two from Draughn.

The list consisted of one quarterback, two running backs, four wide receivers, five offensive linemen, four defensive linemen, three linebackers, four defensive backs, two athletes, and one kicker and one punter.

Senior running back Josh Moore leads the Cavalier selections after rushing for 1,358 yards and 11 touchdowns leading Burke County with a 123.5 yards per game average.

Fellow senior defensive back Chase Childers also made the list after only participating in five games due to injury.

Childers racked up 21 total tackles and grabbed three interceptions, including a touchdown return in a season-opening win at West Caldwell, and recovered one fumble.

Junior offensive lineman Matthew Vue and senior punter Turner Strong also represented EB on the all-conference list.

Senior wide receivers Denver Treadway and Khe-Nai Banks were selected to represent the Wildcats.

Treadway recorded 275 receiving yards on 19 catches and a touchdown while Banks made 24 catches for 259 yards and a touchdown with also serving as a kick returner.

Two-time conference champion Hibriten led the way with seven selections.

The 2019 high school football season began this past Thursday with the first official day of practice for the Draughn Wildcats and the East Burke Cavaliers.

Select Wildcat and Cavalier returning senior starters were selected to share their thoughts on the first week of practice.

"This has been a summer long grind for me and many of my teammates but after week one of official practice I can safely say that the atmosphere breeds high intensity and if we continue to bring our very best day in and day out then I feel like we'll have a very prosperous season."
