Cavs duel with the Devils

Icard- After about a month of layoff due to Covid quarantines, the East Burke football team finally was able to open Catawba Valley Athletic 2A Conference play in duels with the Blue Devils of Maiden and the Red Devils of Newton-Conover.

In Tuesday's 43-6 loss to Maiden, it was a struggle to gain an advantage for the Cavaliers as they couldn't cross midfield until the fourth quarter.

That lone fourth-quarter drive got points on the board for EB off a Carter Crump to Blane Fulbright 15 yard touchdown completion.

Crump completed three of six passes for 34 yards including a 13-yard completion to first-year varsity sophomore Jacob Dellinger.

Saturday saw the Cavaliers have a closed-nosed battle with the Red Devils as the visitors won 19-12 on a hail mary pass with two seconds left on the fourth-quarter clock.

EB trailed 9-0 at the halftime break as two fourth-quarter touchdown runs by senior running back Blane Fulbright for 1 and 60 yards gave the Cavaliers a 12-9 advantage.

The Red Devils managed to get into East Burke territory to attempt a 26-yard field goal that tied the game at 12 with just a little over two minutes remaining.

EB's last drive went for seven plays to near midfield as an incomplete pass by Dawson Langley resulted in a turnover on downs with just a little over a minute remaining.

A clock mishap with 11 seconds remaining gave the Red Devils the opportunity for the win as a hail mary pass was complete in the endzone on the scoreboard side of the stadium over two Cavalier defensive backs.

Fulbright finished with 183 rushing yards on 29 carries as the majority of his second-half carries came on direct snaps.

Cavalier defensive leaders in both contests included Logan Johnson (11 tackles vs Maiden, INT vs N-Conover), Spencer Goins (7 tackles/TFL vs Maiden, INT vs N-Conover), Luke Wilson (7 tackles/TFL vs Maiden, pass breakup/fumble recovery vs N-Conover), Dawson Langley (7 tackles, TFL, sack vs Maiden), Michael Magni (TFL vs N-Conover), Shaheem Webb (sack vs N-Conover), Colton Boyette (TFL vs N-Conover), and Brady Bostain (sack vs N-Conover).

East Burke head football coach Derrick Minor understands the competitiveness of the CVAC and is just looking to go forward towards the next week.

"Even if we had a full week of preparation and were 100% healthy, it's always going to be difficult to play (Maiden and Newton-Conover). Their programs know how to win, we had our opportunity (with Newton) and just let it slip away from us."

The Cavaliers stay home next Friday hosting undefeated Bunker Hill for Homecoming Night.
