JV Cavaliers enjoy successful turnaround season

In a shortened season during the Covid pandemic and a few schools not able to field a JV football team, the East Burke JV Cavaliers were still able to enjoy a bit of success in an effort to rebuild and restore the program's winning tradition.

The season ended Monday with an overall record of 2-2 (2-1 in Northwestern Foothills 2A Conference) after it was announced by head coach Derrick Minor that this week's opponent Fred T. Foard won't be able to field a team for Wednesday's scheduled home game.

"I am so proud of our JV team and what they have accomplished in this short season," said Minor. "They have been committed all summer and into the winter as each week we patiently wondering and hoping that they'd get to play."

Freshman running back Jacob Dellinger and sophomore quarterback Ben Mast was the key intervals to East Burke's offense.

Dellinger averaged 198.2 rushing yards per game with ten touchdown runs and a season-high 273 yards vs. Bunker Hill.

Mast compiled 144 passing yards on 7 of 10 completions with one touchdown pass and a season-high 112 yards vs. Erwin.

Corbin McNeil (4-116, TD) and Luke Wilson (3-28) were the leading receivers for the JV Cavs.

Mast (153, 3 TD), Conner Newton (112, TD), and Levi Coble (108, TD) were also able to rush for more than 100 yards.

Minor also noted having a tough young offensive line and key defenders included Wilson, Coble, and KJ Byrd.

The two losses for East Burke came against tough skilled teams Erwin and Hibriten as Minor is confident this season is great preparation for the years ahead.

"Finishing second in the conference (to Hibriten) and to have a solid team all season speaks to the potential we have here at East Burke. We have moved almost everyone up to help our depth on varsity."

"I love these guys and I am so proud of them, the future is bright for Cavalier football."

From The Coach

"Fred T. Foard is a very solid team, they play extremely hard and are very physical. We are bouncing back from two straight losses, though the score against Hibriten doesn't indicate how well our team played at times."

"Defensively, we must do a better job tackling Foard is a 'smash mouth' run-first team, we are still a little banged up on defense so several young guys will have to step up. Offensively, we found a couple different things that worked for us last week so we have to continue to grow off of that."

"I like our matchup in several key spots, but eventually it will come down to winning the game in the trenches."

From The Coach

Offensively, we have to do a better job of controlling the ball and converting third downs. Special Teams can not give up any big plays."

"We have to bounce back from last week's disappointing loss and respond together."

Wildcats dominate Panthers

Morganton- On a cold Saturday night along the banks of the majestic Catawba River, the Wildcats caught fire.

After trailing by one point at the end of the first quarter, Draughn outscored Patton 21-0 in the second quarter to roll towards a 39-21 win to move to 2-0 for a second consecutive season in the Northwestern Foothills 2A Conference.

For Draughn head coach Chris Powell, it's his first coaching win at Freedom High School - his alma mater - as Patton will be having their home games played at FHS due to field issues on their campus.

"This stadium will always have special meaning to me," said Powell, a 2003 FHS graduate. "At the same time, it's just another field to play on. It doesn't matter where we play, we are going to play to the best of our ability and our kids did that I'm proud of them."

The game opened with Beckett Nelson picking off Patton quarterback Kalen Byrd for a 33-yard interception touchdown return but the Wildcats missed on the extra point.

The Panthers responded with a score on the following drive, an 11-yard touchdown run by Deshawn Cantrell-Vazquez.

It soon turned into the Wildcats game to win as the second quarter started out with freshman quarterback Eli Tillery completing a 29-yard touchdown pass to Zach Pinkerton followed by a Tillery two-point conversion pass to Nigel Dula for a 14-7 lead.

Tillery tossed his second touchdown pass to Nelson for 18 yards and Omarion Conley scored a two-yard touchdown run as the Wildcats led 27-7 at the halftime break.

After giving up a third-quarter touchdown pass to Patton, the Wildcats went back on an offensive onslaught with Dula scoring a nine-yard touchdown run and Nelson getting his second touchdown reception off a 36-yard pass from Desmond Hedrick.

Draughn finished with 332 total yards to Patton's 262 and also forced three Panther turnovers with adding a fumble recovery by Eli Pritchard and an interception by Will Price.

The Wildcats now focus their attention towards next Friday's home matchup with Bunker Hill, a bit of a revenge game after falling short against the Bears 28-27 last season on the road.

"We helped them out last year by starting off slow and they took advantage, we got to have a good week of prep and move forward. I'm just extremely proud of our kids' heart and effort."

-Verse of the Day-

"He made the earth by his power: he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding. When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar: he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses."

Cavs set new rushing record, gain first win over West Iredell

Statesville- The "SWORDS" are sure still continuing to be restored for the East Burke football team.

The Cavaliers came to West Iredell looking for their first 2-0 start in Northwestern Foothills 2A Conference play and to gain their first victory over the Warriors in four tries.

A strong rushing game, led by Blane Fulbright's career-high 240 yards and two touchdowns, and a shutdown defense gave EB all that in a 43-6 road win.

"You can't do this alone, I got a great coaching staff that works tremendously hard," said first-year East Burke coach Derrick Minor. "They bought in 100 percent and when the kids bought in, good things are going to happen."

Fulbright was joined in the rushing stats by quarterback Carter Crump (97 yds, TD), Dawson Langley (65 yds, 2 TDs), freshman Jacob Dellinger (22 yds), and Dalton Teague (7 yds) to finish with a grand total of 431 yards.

It set a new 2A program record for the Cavaliers (2-0) breaking the mark set in 2009 vs. Bunker Hill (410).

The overall record is 526 yards set in 2008 vs. Starmount.

The game's opening drive all went to EB's rushing game going 11 plays ending with a 14-yard touchdown run by Langley.

After West Iredell opened with a three-and-out, the Cavaliers went back to work on another 11 play drive with Fulbright crossing the endzone from four yards out and Langley adding a two-point conversion run for a 14-0 first-quarter lead.

Fulbright scored again to open the second quarter on a nine-yard touchdown run plus Langley's two-point conversion run.

The defense then got on the board as Crump picked off a West Iredell pass in front of the home sideline and raced 74 yards towards the endzone for a 30-0 halftime advantage.

The Cavaliers continued to keep the pedal to the metal opening the second half with an onside kick recovered by Michael Magni and Crump scored in two plays off a 15-yard QB keeper.

Langley scored the final points for the Cavaliers with a third-quarter 19-yard touchdown run to enforce the running clock rule.

EB's defense shut out West Iredell for three quarters and limited them to 177 total yards as led by Logan Johnson (7 tackles, 3 passes defended), Landon Langley (5 tackles, 2 passes defended), Elijah Hess (3 tackles), and Austin Sellers (third quarter INT).

"We want to win the next one, this is just a continual process with these guys every day."

East Burke is back at home next Friday hosting Patton.

Coach's Quote

"We were excited to open the much anticipated season with a win last week, even though we did not play anything close to our best ball."

"This Saturday against Patton, we must do a better job on the offensive side of the ball. We have to start off better and not wait till the second half."

"Defensively, we have to be sound on our responsibilities. (Patton) does a great job of flying to the football so we have to execute our schemes, especially upfront."

"Patton and we are both dealing with a lot of the same issues in numbers and youth. They moved the ball at will last week against Foard and have the ability to make big plays down the field."

-Chris Powell

Coach's Quote

"We are thankful to be playing another week, our guys have momentum going into week two and are believing in each other"

"West Iredell has a tough team and good skill players, we will need to continue to be disciplined on both sides of the ball and special teams"

"Unfortunately our JVs will not play this week so those guys will move up and give us even more depth"
