Lady Cavs cross country finish runner-up at NWFAC championships

Conover- There was no repeat of an East Burke sweep from last season at Saturday's Northwestern Foothills 2A Conference Championship meet.

This year's Lady Cavaliers placed runner-up to first place Patton (39-47).

Foard won the boys 5K race scoring 41 points with East Burke (100) placing fourth and Draughn (114) sixth.

The meet held at Riverbend Park was divided in half among the conference teams as East Burke, Patton, West Caldwell, and West Iredell raced the first half and Bunker Hill, Draughn, Foard, and Hibriten took part in the second half 5K races.

Meah Walsh led the EB girls with a third-place time of 22:24.91 followed by Piper Strong (6th, 25:59.67), Kylie McFalls (12th), Madison Fowler (16th), Janie Ennis (18th), and Mary Blankenship (19th) finishing in the top 20.

Ambria Blalock (4th, 25:25.65) had the best finish for the Lady Wildcats, not scoring as a team, along with Libby Toole (30th), Savannah Gentieu (34th), and Cora Hunt (36th) competing in the race.

The winning streak came to an abrupt end for Draughn junior Reed Farrar as he placed third (18:38.92) in just under a minute's difference from the 5K race winner Ben Trimm (17:53.68) of Foard.

Grady Wooden (19th) was the only other top 20 runner for the Wildcats.

The Cavaliers were led at the finish line by Luke Elliott (6th, 19:57.64), Caleb Johnson-White (10th), and Davin Price (19th).

The 2A regionals are set for January 15th at McAlpine Park.
