Morganton- Three members of the East Burke Middle wrestling team won Thursday at the returning Foothills Athletic Conference tournament hosted by Walter Johnson Middle.
The Raiders had six competitors in the championship finals as Lincoln Pierce (134) was the first to win gold despite being down through two periods but was able to pin his opponent from Liberty Middle in the third period.
Connor Mobley (147) and Joshua Hess (162) each won their championship matches by pinfall.
Pierce finished his season with a 12-0 overall record and Hess, winning his final match in 53 seconds, finished with a 14-0 mark.
Grayson Phillips (108) came in the tournament with a 12-0 record but fell in the championship final with a 3-2 decision to finish 14-1
Zach Ward (100) and Daniel Powell (154) also finished runner-up for EBMS with Brandon Garcia (115), Sam Huffman (140), Chris Moore (184), and Brady Bostain (252) finishing third.
Avie Helton (78) and Vicente Michele (197) represented Heritage Middle in the championship finals each finishing runner-up.
Helton, earning a 12-0 mark in the regular season and finishing 14-1, fell by decision to her West McDowell opponent despite recording two reversals to come back from her 4-0 first period deficit.
Other key finishers for the Eagles included Logan McGee (108, 3rd), Isaiah Eller (134, 3rd), Tino Arellano (154, 3rd), and Chase Davis (172, 4th).

Valdese 11-12 Boys Basketball sweeps Ray Childers
The Valdese Tigers 11-12 (Midget Division) boys basketball #1 and #2 teams hosted Ray Childers Saturday at the Valdese Recreation Center gym and swept the Pirates by scores of 30-12 and 39-22.
Ryan Damron led Valdese #1 with 12 points as the Tigers shut out Ray Childers 12-0 after one-quarter of play.
Blaine Blackwell (9), Sterling Radabaugh (5), and Dakota Ward (4) were other key scorers.
Carter Miller was the leading scorer for Valdese #2 with 15 points with Logan Carswell (9), Bryson Powell (8), and Greyson Orders (5) assisting in scoring for the Tigers.

Five Draughn swimmers gain automatic qualifier times in Last Chance meet
Valdese- In the Cavalier Last Chance meet conducted Friday at the Valdese Aquatic Center, it was five Draughn swimmers that gained automatic 1A/2A regional qualifying times or at least improved upon their registered best time this season.
Georgia Goulding (200 Ind Medley - 2:30.04, 100 free - 57.77) and GiGi Smith (50 free - 27.17, 100 free - 1:00.44) each gained two automatic qualifying times for the Lady Wildcats with Magdolyn Reasoner gaining an automatic qualifying time in the 100 backstroke (1:12.71).
Reasoner also swam a consideration qualifier time in the 100 freestyle.
Gunnar Hudson (200 IM, 100 free), Rhyannon Reasoner (50 free, 500 free), Rachel Wood (50 free, 100 fly), Abby Wood (50 free, 100 fly), and Sarah Mull (200 free) were other Lady Wildcats to have consideration regional qualifying times.
Tommy Blackwell led the Draughn boys with automatic qualifying times in the 200 freestyle (2:04.75) and 100 butterfly (1:02.34).
Jaxon Smith, already setting many school records this season, swam an automatic time of 58.13 in the 100 butterfly.
Other Draughn consideration swimmers included Trey Jensen (50 free, 100 breast), Sean Owens (200 free), and Brady Carswell (100 breast).
East Burke was represented with consideration qualifying times by Robbie Stringfield (boys 200 free, 500 free), Landon Lennex (boys 200 IM, 100 fly), Desiree Gray (girls 200 free), Emma Oxentine (girls 100 fly), boys & girls 200 medley relay, and girls 200 freestyle relay.

Three EBMS wrestlers complete undefeated seasons
Icard- The East Burke Middle School wrestling team hosted their season finale Thursday vs. East McDowell and won in comeback fashion 60-42.
In the process, three Raiders wrestlers each completed undefeated seasons Grayson Phillips (108, 12-0), Lincoln Pierce (134, 10-0), and Joshua Hess (162, 12-0).
East McDowell won the first three of four matches until Phillips pinned his Trojan opponent in 3:47 cutting the lead to six, 18-12.
The Trojans won the next four of seven matches with EBMS winning at 122 (Malachi Bines, pinfall), 134 (Pierce,:28 pinfall), and 154 (Hayden Parker, forfeit).
Hess winning at 162 with a 20-second pinfall tied the match at 36 and the Raiders held momentum the rest of the way with wins by Patrick Hernandez (172, pinfall), Chris Moore (184, forfeit), Jacob Hodges (197, pinfall), and Brady Bostain (252, pinfall).
EBMS finishes the season with a 7-6 overall record (6-6 in the Foothills Athletic Conference).

The Lady Raiders completed a second consecutive 12-0 campaign in the Foothills Athletic Conference (13-0 overall) after Thursday's road win in Marion.
This team only had three losses in three seasons according to EBMS coach Nancy Kelly.
The Lady Raiders were led with 13 points, five rebounds, and an assist by Ally Moore.
Braelyn Stilwell (9 pts, assist), Kamiah Lawing (6 pts, 4 reb, 2 blocks), Kara Brinkley (4 pts, 2 reb), Kassie Turner (2 pts, 7 reb), Macy McNeil (2 pts, reb), and Katherine Greene (pt, reb) all contributed for EBMS.

East Burke Indoor Track sets four new records
Winston-Salem- Four new school records were set Saturday for the East Burke indoor track team at the Championship Invitational meet at the JDL Fast Track indoor facility.
One of the numerous Cavalier records set by Luke Elliott in the boys 1000 meters (2:47.86) was held for 22 years by Jonathan Dameron (1998), a former East Burke and Draughn cross country and track & field coach.
Elliott also won the 1600 meters event in a new personal record time of 4:50.77 at a meet hosted by Bunker Hill last Thursday.
Other East Burke records were set by Noah Rooks (boys shot put, 43-00.50), Reagan Robinson (girls pole vault, 10-00), and Gracie Ruff (girls 300 meters, 47.57).
Chance Keller also set a new personal record in the boys long jump (15-09.75) along with Piper Strong (1000 meters) and Quinton Hemphill (500 meters) having exceptional performances.
"Everyone who participated did very well," said East Burke coach AJ Schwankert. "We (also) had a trio reach a season goal of qualifying for the State Championships."
Rooks, Robinson, and Elliott were the Cavalier performers to earn state qualifications at Saturday's meet.
East Burke will be at the WNC Polar Bear Championship meet hosted by Polk County on February 1st.

Wildcats finish runner-up at NWFAC swimming championships
Lenoir- The Draughn swimming teams finished runner-up to Patton by close scores at Friday's Northwestern Foothills 2A Conference championship meet hosted by the Lenoir Aquatic Center.
The Lady Wildcats fell within 17 points of the Lady Panthers (403-386) with three event wins.
The Wildcat boys finished 39 points behind Patton (352-313) with two event wins.
One of the championship event wins had Jaxon Smith setting his own new school record in the 100 backstroke (55.43) with also placing first in the 100 freestyle (50.00).
Smith also joined Tommy Blackwell, Jake Hudson, and Sean Owens on the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:43.52).
The Wildcats also gained a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay with Blackwell (100 fly) and Hudson (500 free) having runner-up finishes.
The Lady Wildcats were represented by championship wins from Georgia Goulding (100 fly, 1:05.37), Rhyannon Reasoner (500 free, 6:45.90), and the 400 freestyle relay (4:06.09) compiled of Goulding, Reasoner, Gunnar Hudson, and GiGi Smith.
Hudson also set her own new school record in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.81) placing third with having a new personal best in the 200 individual medley (2:34.47) finishing second.
Sarah Mull was another runner-up finisher for the Lady Wildcats in the 200 freestyle.
"Swimmers stepped up and swam new events (for us) in the conference meet," said Draughn swimming coach David Harmon.
"Overall across the board, the team members swam personal best times and we haven't even began to tapper for the regional and state meets. Very proud of the team effort as we have begun to narrow the gap on both Patton teams."
Alex Lennex led the East Burke boys (3rd, 260) with a win in the 200 freestyle (2:05.25) and a third-place finish in the 500 freestyle.
The Lady Cavaliers (5th, 188) were represented by Desiree Gray (200 IM 6th, 100 fly 7th), Rachel Stephens (200 free 8th), Erin Newton (200 free 9th), Gracie Hall (100 free 9th), Alisia Burkeen (500 free 9th), Kloie Grubs (500 free 10th), and Emma Oxentine (100 back 10th).
Draughn and East Burke will participate in the Last Chance qualifier meet next Friday at the Valdese Recreation Center as the 1A/2A western regional championship meet are scheduled for February 1st at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.

The Wildcats also gained a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay with Blackwell (100 fly) and Hudson (500 free) having runner-up finishes.
The Lady Wildcats were represented by championship wins from Georgia Goulding (100 fly, 1:05.37), Rhyannon Reasoner (500 free, 6:45.90), and the 400 freestyle relay (4:06.09) compiled of Goulding, Reasoner, Gunnar Hudson, and GiGi Smith.
Hudson also set her own new school record in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.81) placing third with having a new personal best in the 200 individual medley (2:34.47) finishing second.
Sarah Mull was another runner-up finisher for the Lady Wildcats in the 200 freestyle.
"Swimmers stepped up and swam new events (for us) in the conference meet," said Draughn swimming coach David Harmon.
"Overall across the board, the team members swam personal best times and we haven't even began to tapper for the regional and state meets. Very proud of the team effort as we have begun to narrow the gap on both Patton teams."
Alex Lennex led the East Burke boys (3rd, 260) with a win in the 200 freestyle (2:05.25) and a third-place finish in the 500 freestyle.
The Lady Cavaliers (5th, 188) were represented by Desiree Gray (200 IM 6th, 100 fly 7th), Rachel Stephens (200 free 8th), Erin Newton (200 free 9th), Gracie Hall (100 free 9th), Alisia Burkeen (500 free 9th), Kloie Grubs (500 free 10th), and Emma Oxentine (100 back 10th).
Draughn and East Burke will participate in the Last Chance qualifier meet next Friday at the Valdese Recreation Center as the 1A/2A western regional championship meet are scheduled for February 1st at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.

The East Burke Middle School girls basketball team completed a sweep of Heritage Middle Thursday on Eighth Grade Night in a game played at East Burke High.
The Lady Raiders (12-0, 11-0 FAC) built a commanding 16-6 lead over the Lady Eagles behind six points from Ally Moore.
Free throws from Moore, Braelyn Stilwell, and Kamiah Lawing continued to build the lead for EBMS despite Jenna Abernathy and Rylee Woody each dropping a three-pointer for HMS to cut into the advantage.
The second half belonged to the Lady Raiders outscoring the Lady Eagles 10-6 and 14-6 as Stilwell led with a team-high 14 points and Lawing recorded her second double-double of the week (12 points, 10 rebounds).
Moore (7) and Kassie Turner (5) were other key scorers for EBMS, heading into their season finale at East McDowell next Thursday.
Woody finished with a game-high 16 points off three 3-pointers in the second half.
