Wildcats shutout Ironmen

Cherryville- The Draughn football team went all out to make history Friday night at Cherryville's Rudisil Stadium.

The Wildcats are now winners of two straight games for the first time since the 2013 season after shutting out the Ironmen 61-0.

The 61 points is a new team scoring record after scoring 55 points at Foard last week.

It's only their second shutout vs. Cherryville after a 42-0 win in 2011 and fourth overall in program history.

"I'm tickled to death for our kids," said Draughn head coach Chris Powell. "The kids are playing with a lot of confidence and a lot of tenacity, they are just really playing as a team."

The Wildcats first got on the board defensively with a 20-yard fumble return by Mason Pratt.

After a Cherryville turnover on downs, Braxton Cox and Co went to work on the offensive side of the ball firing back to back touchdown passes to Denver Treadway from 10 and 21 yards.

Cox later completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Khe-Nai Banks and Trent Corn added a 35-yard touchdown run as the first quarter was completed with a 34-0 score.

"Braxton did a good job getting the ball to our receivers and our run game was very good so hats off to our guys up front," said Powell.

The second quarter saw Cox and Treadway hook up for the third time on a 13-yard scoring completion and Corn scampered for a 57 yard touchdown run to go into the halftime break with a 48 point advantage.

As the whole second half was in running clock mode, the Wildcats (2-2) got on the board off Cox's fifth touchdown completion to Nick Chrisco for 43 yards in the third quarter and a fourth-quarter nine-yard touchdown run by Omarion Conley.

Ryan Kaminske completed seven of nine PATs to also add to Draughn's record-setting point total.

Cox had a perfect passing performance on 11 completions for 191 yards with Chrisco (3-96), Treadway (5-68), and Banks (2-24) leading the receiving core.

"Everybody executed and doing what they were supposed to do, it just gives us a good lead into our next games," said Cox.

Chrisco and Treadway also crossed over the 500-yard mark in their two-year careers.

"It feels great to win back to back games, we just got to keep working," said Treadway.

Zach Poteat led Draughn defensively with two tackles for loss and a sack with Treadway (TFL), Banks (fumble recovery), Chrisco (TFL), Bryan Walker (INT), Beckett Nelson (pass breakup), Gavin Tucker (blocked punt), Donavan King (TFL), and Avien Parker (2 pass breakups) assisting.

The Wildcats return home next Friday to complete the non-conference schedule with Avery County in a rematch of a back and forth offensive rally from last season.
