Minor named new East Burke football coach

Icard- A new era will begin for the East Burke football program heading into a new century after naming Derrick Minor as the newest Cavaliers head coach.

"I am excited about Coach Minor's passion for what he does on the football field and for students and student-athletes," said East Burke principal Katie Moore. "His goals and vision for the Cavalier football program align with ours. He has a desire for students to not only succeed as great athletes but also as great young men."

Minor formerly was the head football coach at nearby Fred T. Foard in Newton competing against the Cavaliers in the Northwestern Foothills 2A Conference.

His success with the Tigers included a winning season of nine wins and four losses in 2017 with a second-round 2AA state playoff appearance and a third-place finish in the NWFAC behind Patton and eventual 2AA state champion Hibriten.

"I have been drawn to East Burke for a while now," said Minor. "There is a history of football success that will help us build upon, I have watched the administration over the past few years and how they support their coaches and athletic department. They want football to be successful and with their support and the buy-in from the players and community, I believe this will be a successful program."

Minor, with a total of 49 career wins, also had coaching stops at Princeton (2012-15) and Rockingham (2015-16) before coming to Foard and will be the tenth head coach at EBHS.

He is currently a physical education teacher at Oak Hill Elementary School in Morganton and received the Teacher of the Year award.

"We like that he has a proven track record and was able to turn around programs similar to ours," said East Burke athletic director Jim Childers. "We are excited about what he has in store for East Burke football."

Burke County Schools superintendent Dr. Larry Putnam added, "I appreciate the EBHS administration for taking their time in the selection process and using their professional judgment to hire a teacher and a coach who has the best interest of our students in mind."
